The push to get the Washington Redskins to change their team name from it’s derogatory origin is gaining steam and attention. Former Oakland Raiders CEO and CBS NFL analyst Amy Trask talked with Doug Gottlieb about the possibility of the Redskins changing the organization’s name.
“I don’t know if it’s an issue of what the Washington Redskins have to do or must do,” Trask said. “But there’s a tremendous, tremendous opportunity for the Redskins to make a very, very powerful statement and do some thing very special and change the name of an organization, change the team name, change the logo, from a word, which has a derogatory origin … It was a slur.”
There are some people and fans that don’t share the viewpoint of Trask, but she says those people maybe don’t understand it’s origin.
“I don’t know that a small portion of the population feels that it was from or originated as a derogatory term … it was originated as a derogatory term,” Trask said. “Whether people are being vocal or not about speaking out is a different issue.”
For the Redskins to make the change it will cost them. But according to Trask, there are some costs that are worth the cause and she believes this is one of those.
“Will there be a cost associated with it? or course there will be,” Trask said. “Sometimes costs are worth bearing. But again that’s my viewpoint and I think one of the beauties of living in a place where the freedom of speech is a paramount of importance is we all get to air our viewpoints.”
